Bee Gardens

In the summer months, bees are highly resourceful and will find food from nearby flowers. If, however, you are concerned there are not enough flowers nearby, you could consider planting a bee garden.

Planting bee-friendly flowers is a way of helping your local hives flourish and providing ongoing sources of nectar and pollen. When planting, be sure to keep in mind when each of the plants bloom so that you have a nice range of types and staggered bloom times. You want to ensure your bees have access to a good supply of pollen from spring until late summer. Plant native species, and opt for single flowers rather than those with multiple tightly-packed heads. For me that includes: foxglove, borage, lemon balm (commonly known as ‘bee balm’!), zinnias, sedum, goldenrod, calendula, cosmos, echinacea, and hosta. We are lucky to have apple, avocado, orange and peach trees nearby as well. Also try Viper’s bugloss (Echium vulgare) with its vivid blue flowers that will attract numerous bees in high summer, as well as comfrey, honeysuckle, and red and white clover. Avoid flowers that produce little or no pollen and nectar, such as pansies.

You could even plant little pots with various flowering plants – it doesn’t have to be a big garden.

Do try to avoid using any pesticides in your garden, as almost all of these can harm bees. These products are often labelled as ‘bug killers’ or something similar.
